James Field was a native of Port Chester, New York. He came to Oregon with a wagon train in 1845, settling at first in Oregon City. In 1849 he led a party to the Missouri River, and later continued to the east coast. Shortly thereafter he returned to Portland by ship via San Francisco. He died in 1903 in Port Chester.
